For this calculator, "tax burden" refers to the total amount of state-level taxes you would pay annually, including income tax, sales tax, and property tax. This gives you a comprehensive view of your total state tax liability.
Our calculator considers the three major state-level taxes that most individuals encounter:
Calculation: Annual Income × State Income Tax Rate
Data Source: State tax brackets and rates as of 2025
Assumption: We use the highest marginal rate for simplicity. Actual rates may vary based on income brackets and filing status.
What's NOT included: Federal income tax, local income taxes, or state-specific deductions and credits
Calculation: (Annual Income × 30%) × State Sales Tax Rate
Assumption: 30% of annual income is spent on taxable goods and services
What's NOT included: Local sales tax variations, exempt items (groceries, prescription drugs), or online purchases
Note: Many states have varying local sales tax rates. We use state-level rates only.
Calculation: (Annual Income × 25%) × State Property Tax Rate
Assumption: Property value is approximately 25% of annual income
What's NOT included: Local property tax variations, homestead exemptions, or special assessments
Note: Property tax rates vary by county and municipality. We use state averages.
